Community Food Connections

Over these last several months, many older adults and other vulnerable members of our community have been coping with additional stress and anxiety due to COVID 19. In addition to the stress of physical and social distancing, many Guysborough County residents have also experienced financial worry and concern.

The Mulgrave and Area Wellness Hub (Mulgrave and Area Medical Centre), received funding through the Federal Government’s New Horizon Program, the Nova Scotia Department of Community, Culture and Heritage Program and Nova Scotia  Department of Seniors to support older vulnerable adults in Guysborough County who are experiencing  challenges related to food security.

Guysborough County has one of the oldest populations in Nova Scotia, with 50% of its residents over the age of 55 years old. Having access to quality, nutritious food is fundamental to overall health and well-being and at times this can, be challenging for some older adults for many reasons.

The program, called Community Food Connections is now underway.  Community Food Connections Coordinator, Brent Lundrigan, the Board of Directors of the Mulgrave and Area Medical Centre Ltd. and a Project Advisory Committee have been connecting with service providers and other partners throughout Guysborough County who work with older adults to identify people in our communities that would benefit the most from this program.

The program involves home delivery of a variety of frozen meals options at no cost to participants.  The funding is in place until the end of February, 2021.

To be eligible to take part in this program, participants must be an older adult- 55 years and over and be a resident of Guysborough County. The program is intended to support older adults who are socially isolated, have difficulty getting to a grocery store due to health or transportation challenges, have health or mobility issues, have financial concerns, or are experiencing other barriers and difficulties.

Mulgrave Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is an initiative of the MAWH that provides free food and sundries to anyone in the Mulgrave area. Food security is a concern of ours and affects the overall health of our communities as evidenced by the following stats;

  • 1 in 5 Nova Scotian's face food insecurity
  • NS has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the country
  • 1 in 3 children in Guysborough County face food insecurity

It is our goal to ensure that everyone has access to food and basic hygiene products. The Food Pantry is open 24 hours/day 7 days/week and is anonymous. The Food Pantry is operated by volunteers who monitor it to ensure inventory levels are well maintained, check for suggestions, check best before dates on food content and replenish inventory as required. The Food Pantry is temporarily located inside the Superport building on Main Street with the Credit Union ATM.

The Mulgrave and Area Medical Centre received funding from the Guysborough County Community Health Board for this project – the funding is limited.

Donations are always welcome, feel free to drop off non-perishable food items or sundries directly into the food pantry. If you would like to donate financially, please email for more information. avemedicalcentre/services/?service_id=1814202818679919&ref=page_internal
